ERTMS will facilitate the expansion of the European railways, including seamless cross-border operation. Its final aim is to replace all existing national systems on the Trans European Railway Network.
Its main constituent, ETCS (European Train Control System) can be deployed in three main variants: levels 1, 2 and 3. These systems enhance line capacity while ensuring the safe running of trains at all speeds.
