The existing bascule bridge over the entrance to the Rijnhaven (Rhine harbour) on Hoornseweg in Alphen aan den Rijn was to be replaced by a modern bridge. The project area encompassed the main Hoorn road, from Van Foreestlaan to Ondernemingsweg.

Movares carried out all design work on the bridge, the foundations, the installations and the approach roads, from final design to specifications and detailing.

The existing bascule bridge over the entrance to the Rijnhaven needed replacing. One of the interesting features of the new bridge is that for architectural reasons the fixed end of the new span is located on the opposite side to that of the old. Although this means that the cantilever columns of the new bridge are located on the east abutment instead of the west, it proved possible to re-use large parts of the existing foundations.

Customer requirements

Alphen aan den Rijn town council wished to replace the existing bridge with a safe, new, modern bridge.
